Magazine Shoot

Magazine Photo Shoot

1. What did you do? Include what you did last lesson and today in your group. W
hat did you have to organise?

Referring back to Andrea Bricco and Henrik Bonnevier's work we had to set up our own photoshop organising the objects we brought in the way each of the artist do.  The objects we bought in were cosmetic/makeup products looking back at Andrea Bricco's work she draws something in the background relating to the objects she has, so we drew a face which relates to the makeup products. We also referred back to our typography work and used products to spell out MAKEUP like Ed Ruscha's work.

Andrea Bricco Photo shoot

2. How did you do it? How did you all work together?

We tried to use skills we had within our group to setup the different shoots, for example one of us was good at drawing so she was the one who drew the face for the background in the Andrea Bricco photo shoot. Another was good at the typography so he was the one who wrote out the words on the Bricco shoot, the photography was covered by the the photography student. As a group we worked well together and we all contribuated well. The Henrik Bonnievier shoot we all moved around and played with the objects and took photos from different angles.

3. What went well? Did you learn anything new? Did your group work effectively? Were your photos successful?

We were able to interpret Bonnievier and Bricco's work well I think because we referred back to their work and used the objects we had relating to their style each. With Bonnievier style we were able to move around the objects and see how we could improve the shots from different angles. I learn't how to take pictures from angles where the light creates good shadows and shines well on the objects. We had some successful photos especially in the Henrik Bonnievier still life shoot, in my view the objects we had worked best in the Bonnievier shoot.

4. What could you improve? Could anything have been done better? Did you have any problems?

We could of had more objects to work with so that we could experiment more, because we had little objects we were not able to develop our shoots. We could of improved a lot more in the Bricco shoot because we struggled to set up the objects with the drawn image in the background. Also maybe next time lay the objects flat and take birds eye perspective shots. Our main problem was that we didn't have enough objects to use.

Andrea Bricco

Context
Andrea Bricco is a food and lifestyle photographer. She is mainly influenced by her Family‘s restaurant where the presentation of the food is key and the recipes, she managed combined her love for food with photography creating a unique artistic blend with the two. Her work has been published in many magazines such as GQ, Angeleno Magazine and Urbanite Magazin.

Meaning
On her website you can see various way which she captures photos of not only food but also cultural photography. She mixes in lifestyle with her love of food, she captures photos of food and people in their own environment this is the theme running through her work. The images she captures of the food have clear lighting shone from above the image which highlights the image she creates with the food, for example the photos she took of the plate with a scenery created with food.

Aesthetic
She uses sketches of the actual still life food that is in the photo as a background. For example the image I have is of Pumpkin soup I believe and she sketched an image of a pumpkin in the background with chalk on a black canvas. The colors in these photos are quit dull but the fancy cutlery and simplicity of the image adds a traditional feel to the photo.

Personal response
I personally don't like this image because there's not much vibrant colors in the photo, compared to my personal techniques or ideas its a simple image. Other photos she has taken I do like and would use as an influence in my take of her style. For example in this image I like the use of object and hand drawings used with the roses and stems, I also like the use of soft shades of pink in the petals the technique with the water colors I believe adds a soft touch.

Henrik Bonnevier

Context

Bonnevier is a still life photographer who focuses on nontraditional and delicate compasition with a use of block colors in his work. He mainly works for modern interiors, cosmetic and jewelry brands etc.

Meaning

To develop more of an understanding of his work I looked at his blog where there are numerous photos, different variousions of his work and themes used. Most of his pieces are used as advertisement such as the photograph of the Heinz ketchup bottle, however instead of actual ketchup there's tomatoes in the bottle which is quit smart and original.

Aesthetic

The green and yellow base of this certain image I've chosen is quite contrasting in a sense, the layout and positioning of the objects is thought out carefully to create movement in the image. All the object are able to be viewed, the limit of color in the image alows the focus of the image to stay on the objects and the lay out,the viewers eyes can move around the page and see something going on at each angle.

Personal response

Certain aspects of his work I find interesting and inspirational such as the Heinz ketchup photo, I like the way he used real objects such as the tomatoe inside the bottol instead of the actual ketchup the sense of obviousness and clarity of it I could try to use in my own photo shoots.

Artists Analysis

Matthew
Midgley

My interpretation of Mathew Midgleys work

Context
Is a freelance illustrator working in West Yorkshire. He graduated from college, in 1992, with a degree in English and has developed his style by working in a series of sketchbooks. His influences come from modern illustrative artists, focusing on urban life.  His primary source of inspiration is from observation, he works directly onto paper using ink; fine line, waterproof pens and sometimes biro or marker pen for effect, he completes his piece by adding watercolor.  This piece is called IKEA-Swedish Meatballs which he posted on Sept 23rd 2012; I don’t think that Midgley made this drawing for a main purpose other than his illustration collection he creates by doing quick sketches of what he sees and write little captions. I chose to analyze this piece which I was most interested by because even though its hand drawn the fine liner out line and the watercolors make the image look animated, like most of his work. I want to use his technique where he outlines the sketch with light black liner and fills the images with light watercolors.
Meaning
To understand his work and see the meaning towards his pieces I looked at his website which is more of a blog where he posts his work and captions explaining the drawing. The caption which he linked to Swedish Meatballs said” IKEA’s meatballs are just SO tasty. But you have to have the gravy and the lingen berries with them. Otherwise it’s just not the same. When in … Rome.”  I would associate as illustration art because of the animated look to his pieces, I think that’s his theme he creates simple observational sketches which he outlines with black biro or fine liner and changes the sketch to looking animated. This piece in particular I think that its not really about a main subject or has a deep meaning to it, I think that the way Midgley presents and displays his work can be taken as advertisement. He makes drawings which he links to his thoughts, which are what I find most inspirational about his work and could relate to.
Aesthetic
Midgley creates his work by doing simple sketches in his books and outlines the drawings with black biro or fine liner; he stated that black ink gives a crisp, defined edge to his drawing work. Once initial outlines and detailing is complete he adds watercolor wash. With this certain piece the colours are quite dull; there are different shades of brown but the use of those colors makes the food in the image look more realistic. The formal elements which I think are key with this work are the lines used; in certain areas the lines create darker shades within the drawings of the food for example the meatballs. Also the colors are simple but bold and adds realistic elements to the drawing, the dark outline make the drawing look animated and cartoon like.
Personal Response
I chose to look at this piece of work because IKEA is a well known and popular brand/company, my first reaction when I saw this was that I found it really intriguing how a simple sketch could be developed and made to look like an illustration. I like the detail of the chips the most but however I think that the colors could have been more bold and bright. Midgleys work reminds me of Georgina Lucks work, she also makes her work stand out by adding the dark outlines and adding color to make the work stand out. Matthew Midgleys work has inspired me to experiment with simple sketches by adding dark black outlines and using water color or ink to fill in the images and make it look animated.
Georgina Luck

Context
She is a freelance illustrator working in Brighton, color and an interest in line quality through mark making form the basis of her work. She studied at the Bristol School of Art, graduating in 2006. She currently illustrate across a wide range of platforms including packaging, book jackets and outdoor media. She has produces work for companies such as Marks & Spencer, Tesco, The New York Times Magazine and many more. This piece is one of the work she did advertising and celebrating the UK 2012 Olympics.
Meaning
This work in particular symbolizes the London 2012 Olympics, which Luck is trying to represent clearly. Although this piece individually does not have a title, it is a part of numerous piece Georgina Luck did for the Olympics this one represents the Sprints I think.
Aesthetic
The color used and the way its used is what makes this piece unique, the way the ink is splattered on and the direction it goes works well with the actual image of the woman running makes it look realistic. I think the way the ink is placed is deliberate because it looks animated with the dark outlines of the drawing but the way the ink is makes it look realistic like the wind that runs through when running. I think the actual image of the woman and the track was sketched out with pencil then black ink liner used on the outlines, the ink was placed on certain areas to create movement.
Personal Response
I personally like this image and the meaning behind it, the way the ink is placed creates movement in the image and makes it look more realistic in a sense. I find the way there's color on half of the image and colored on the other side, makes half of the image look realistic and the black and white side animated.

Natsko
Seki

My own interpretation of  Seki's work

Context
Natsko Seki grew up in Tokyo, she studied illustration in Brighton but gradually made her way to London where she works on pieces for world wide companies. She finds inspiration from architecture and fashion, she also collects photos of family and friends which she creates collages of. She believes that this is a crucial part of her work, that her illustrations become personal and have a meaning. These images I chose was for Matsuya Ginza a Japanese department store, the posters tell the story of the store's history in the form of a pop-up book.

Aesthetic
There's a use of a range of colours which help make the images that pop up stand out individually instead of being one whole piece together. I think this was made by creating some images by hand and some on illustrator/photoshop, when there was a range of images she created the cut outs. I think the composition is designed to be laid out in a particular way to create a story or relation to all of the images together. Theres a lot of colour and shape used in these pieces which create movement and help tell a story.
Meaning
The work has a narrative for example the pop up image of a park combined with a concert, I think that its a big park with a wide range of activities available such as a concert stage, tennis court and garden area this is a normal set up of the use a big park could have in reality which I think is portrayed well in this image. This is more of a Landscape type of art the way it set up has more of a landscape scale to evaluate and view.
Personal Response
I personally like the way a story is created with illustration and the way the story is laid out, I think its very effective and interesting. My first reaction when I saw this piece is that I liked the range of colour and movement going on, the realistic approach also with the park lay out with the people walking around and the trees etc.

Comparing the artists
All three of these artists have unique approaches with their work but also their outcomes have the animated and cartoon like effect in common. They all develop observational drawings by adding dark black outlines and fill in the images with ink or water colors.

Midgley work compared to Lucks is more neatly displayed whereas Lucks messy color fill with ink is what makes the statement in her work, because its an unusual approach. Natsko compared to the other two artists develops her work in different stages using cut out images and laying them out on to a flat landscape. Seki's work I find least interesting or attractive because I think there's too much going on in the image, whereas Luck for example has one main subject that she develops with the dark outline and the ink drops.

Midgley and Lucks work can be preserved as advertisement pieces, even though Midgleys intention isn't to advertise more to display his thought about what he sees. Lucks work changes common packaging like Heinz Beans by adding her splats of paint/ink. Seki unlike Midgley and Luck uses black and white images in her work, I think this adds more detail and intentions to her work.

Georgina Lucks method of drawing is what interest me the most and the way she adds splats of color without the worry of the image begin messed up or damaged, the inaccurate adds of color is what changes the whole look of the image.

Typography Project Evaluation

1. Write an explanation of your brief: What did you have to do? How did you come up with the ideas for this project?
Through out this project I have experiment with different styles and techniques used to make typography, I have analysed and interpreted artists techniques such as Si Scott, Hebok Lee and Vladmir Koncar.
To finalize my ideas I create mood boards and t-shirt initial ideas to make my ideas come together and help me develop my t-shirt design.

2. Write about the creative 'journey' of the project: How did you project and ideas evolve from start to finish through experimentation and research?
On my creative journey to make my t-shirt I had to figure out how I would transfer my final typography text onto my t-shirt, I chose to heat press. I had to create a mood board to gather my ideas together and use images of t-shirt designs I liked from the internet. When I had all my ideas together I could see what direction I wanted to go in and what text to apply onto my t-shirt, which was a song lyric.

3. Who inspired your final outcomes? You MUST talk about who has inspired your work, and include images and links of/to them!
The main insperation for my final design was Si Scott his use of 'swirl' movement on the letters and how the text were laid out, which I thought I could interpret into my text. He doesn't use alot of colour in most of his typography which allows all the focus to be on the unique, hand crafted and hand drawn technique. However I chose to interpret his style but design my typography final design on Illustrator.

4. What saying or expression did you use? What technique did you use? Was there a link between your materials and the words used? What was it?
My expression for my final outcome was a lyric from one of my favorite songs which was "That's just the way it is." I chose a simple font which I edited on Illustrator, I placed the letters where I thought best and used the 'swirl' and 'warp' tools to get the Si Scott style effect. The technique I used and the effects some people may not see a link but out of the artists I researched Si Scott style reminds me of fantasies and movement, which I think links to my phrase "That's just the way it is" basically when things happen in life that's just the way it is!

5. What do you think you have done well? What has worked? Are you happy with your final outcome?
I think I interpreted the artist of my choices unique style of typography well for my final out come but tried to add my own style twist on it. Even though I think the text and the 'swirl' effect slightly worked well, I am not happy with my final outcome because I feel like I could of used my imagination more and refined my idea better.

6. What do you think you could have improved in your final outcome? There will be something - nobody is perfect!
To improve my final outcome I think there's a lot I could of done. Firstly I would of chose a phrase that I could of linked the typography style with better and had a connection, secondly maybe add some color to make the typography stand out on the t-shirt more. Finally I instead of heat pressing my outcome I would of cut out big stencil letters and spray painted, so that the typography would fill the majority of the t-shirt.

7. Conclusion: Overall how did you find the project? Would you like to complete more typographic work in the future?
Typography helped my learn how to use Photoshop and Illustrator because I've never used them to edit things before. Overall I did not like this project, however when I saw my final outcome I thought of how I could of change a lot of things which could of helped me get a better outcome which I liked.

FINAL T-SHIRT DESIGN

This is my final t-shirt design, overall I don't think the design came out as I hoped the font is not very imagnative and I don't think the 'swirl' and 'warp' effect that Si Scotts work has is displayed well.

HeeBok Lee Font & Spray paint outcome

I created kinetic typography text inspired be  Hebok Lee techniques. I used different effects to create different motions such as blurs, shakes and overlapping.

I drew out big bold letters with a word that is a 'informative expression' to use as my stencil. On a second sheet of A3 card I lightly trace my lettering through then sketched a pattern into the text for cutting, once I had drawn my patterns I cut the pattern out carefully (not the letters). With the two completed stencils I spray painted the first full text stencil which I then removed and place the pattern stencil.

T-Shirt Design Ideas Mood Board

Si Scott Interpretation

This is my interpretation of Si Scott style font. Si Scott is a artist based in the UK. He's renowned for his unique style, blending hand-crafted and hand-drawn artwork that has gained him numerous awards and well known client list. So far in his career produced work for Vogue, Nike, Tiffany & Co and Sony to name a few. As well as contributing to advertising campaigns for Guinness, Absolut and American Express. He warps ends of the letters then swirling it, he doesn't use a lot of color most of his work is in black and white with simple input of colour. I created my own Si Scott inspired typography using wrap and twirl tool in Illustrator. With my saying and expression text I chose a simple and bold font Impact, I separated the letters to give space between the letters for the swirl effect. I then selected the Wrap Tool to drag and extend edges of letters so that I could start to swirl the extend parts of the letters. I also added extra lines to swirl.
